Greetings,
The world we reside in is unpredictable in all its ways. Everywhere is filled with dread, disease, and insurmountable destruction. Where can an individual find hope amid such confusion? Told is a story of a man who borrowed twenty dollars from his long-time friend. Before accepting the money borrowed, he made sure that his friend understood that he intended to pay him back, "that is a guarantee," he quipped breathlessly. Well, after a month, to be exact, the friend still hadn't seen or heard from his good friend. One day he spotted him hanging out at the same barbershop where they both regularly received haircuts on a particular day. Umm, mused the friend, funny running into you after all this time. When asked about his commitment to pay the twenty dollars back, he sadly lamented that he would someday pay his friend back; however, he couldn't due to circumstances beyond his control. Upon hearing the sad account, his friend slowly and emphatically whispered, eventually, and ultimately, someday.
Well, that is an account of human behavior. Contrary to human interactions is the God we serve. Does God operate on some days? Is God a someday God? We know that God is a God of now, the present. For example, Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three gathered in my name, there am I among them." In other words, God is always present no matter what we are experiencing. Can you give an argument about the chaos that would ensue if we served a someday God-I can't? The friend may have had good intentions and allowed the futility of the world to influence his prior commitment to paying his good friend back.
Bountiful Blessings,
Minister Sylvia Joyner
